Helpful information about mobility and independence

Port Orleans Riverside Resort

5 min read

I stayed at the Port Orleans Riverside Resort during my most recent trip to Disney. It’s one of Disney’s Moderate Resorts. Moderate price between the lower-priced Value Resorts but not nearly as expensive as the Deluxe Resorts. I liked this resort and felt I received good value from staying there.

Port Orleans Riverside is very picturesque and quaint. However, coupled with the adjoining French Quarter Resort, the property is vast and spread over 325 acres. It has 2,048 rooms available, just at the Port Orleans Riverside. By comparison, the smaller French Quarter Resort has 1,008 rooms. Visit PortOrlean.org for more detailed information. It’s one of several great websites dedicated to everything about the Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter Resorts.

I appreciated having a mobility scooter at my disposal when I stayed in Riverside. In short, enjoying all the resort offers was nice without having to struggle by walking all over the property. Even taking a few trips over to the French Quarter’s Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory for breakfast or dinner was easy.

A full-width, paved walkway connects both properties alongside the Disney-created Sassagoula River. In particular, I enjoyed looking at the beautiful scenery and landscaping as I moved freely between the two resorts. Above all, looking at the River, occasionally with a boat on it, gave me a sense of peace. It was quiet and relaxing, especially after dealing with the crowds in the Theme Parks all day.

Handicap Room With A Walk-In Shower And Shower Seat At Port Orleans Riverside Resort

I booked a handicapped room that featured a walk-in shower and shower seat. More importantly, I could fit two ECVs into the room comfortably. Furthermore, there was plenty of space left over to boot! However, we pushed the table against the dresser and one of the chairs. We did this, just a matter of convenience that allowed for a bit more open space!

Room And Bathroom Dimensions With Features At The Port Orleans Riverside Resort

The room sizes at Port Orleans Riverside Resort are approximately 314 square feet. Generally, this is the standard size for the moderate category resort rooms. There were two queen size beds in the handicapped-accessible room I booked. Other room furniture included a dresser, an armoire closet, a square table with two chairs, and a nightstand between the beds.

All the other room amenities, such as a mini-fridge (hidden in the dresser) and 55″ wall-hanging TV (facing the foot of the beds), were included. Look to touringplans.com as another excellent source of information about Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort.

Overall room measurements are approximately 12 3/4 ft by 24 3/4 ft, which includes the bathroom area. Furthermore, the bathroom entrance features a sliding pocket door to better use the total floor space. In short, the design makes it handicap-friendly!

As a side note, I know that some of the mathematicians out there will come up with a square footage total of 315.56. However, I only had a 6 ft tape measure with me and tried my best to get these measurements without crawling all over the floor. So cut me some slack!

The total bathroom area is 5 1/2 ft by 12 3/4 ft or about 70 square feet. This dimension includes the walk-in shower, which accounts for about 16 1/2 square feet of that space. Subsequently, there is enough room to maneuver around.

Walk-in shower dimensions were 3 ft by 5 1/2 ft. Along with the drop-down shower seat, there was a handheld showerhead (hose approximately 6 ft long) in addition to the conventional shower head.

Put A Doorstop In Your Backpack Or The Mobility Device Seat Pocket

One of the essential items that I brought with me was a doorstop. The room doors at the Port Orleans Riverside have door closers on them, plus they’re heavy. It’s much easier to keep the door open instead of continually pushing back on it. Above all, it makes it much easier to go through the doorway when opened wide.

You may not always have someone to hold the door open for you; sometimes, they can get in the way. However, if you are somewhat ambulatory, you can open the door and prop it open yourself. Otherwise, they can support the door open for you if you are with someone else. Then you can get your wheelchair or ECV through the door without it closing on you.

Don’t get one of those hollow doorstops at your local hardware store. They usually are not designed to hold heavy doors and probably will collapse on themselves. It’s happened to me several times. Here is a link to a good doorstop on Amazon that will be much more suitable for your needs. Above all, the price is under $10.00.

Here is a picture of my room door at Port Orleans Riverside. I walk with a cane primarily for support and balance. In this case, I was able to set the doorstop myself. However, I disabled the drive and brake systems instead of backing out under power. It’s easy to do using the manual freewheel lever. As a result, I could push the ECV right out of the room.

Outlet Adapter To Expand The Electrical Outlets In Your Room

Another indispensable item you should pack in your suitcase is an outlet adapter to expand the electrical outlets in your room. In this age of electronic devices, there never seem to be enough electrical outlets. Ordinarily, hotel rooms never have enough, and staterooms on cruise ships are worse. I came across an ECHOGEAR On-Wall Surge Protector on Amazon. To begin with, it allows you to go from two outlets to 4 pivoting AC outlets and 2 USB ports. The pivoting function is great because it will enable the insertion of plugs from the side and front positions. Also, it has 1080 Joules of Surge Protection to help protect your gear. It’s worth the $20.00 just for the sake of convenience.

In summary, I hope that this information will prove to be of some value to you—my take on Port Orleans Riverside is just my opinion. Then, you could apply some of this essential information to the other resorts at Disney World. Of course, the room sizes will vary, but you’ll still get an idea of what works and doesn’t.
