Secretomic studies to identify myokines released from skeletal muscle or isolated myocytes kept in culture have therefore gained considerable interest, and at present more than 600 myokines have been described (Gorgens etal., 2015). Myonectin has been identified as a novel myokine that links skeletal muscle to systemic lipid homeostasis (Seldin et al., 2012). On the other hand, loss-of-function mutations or deletion of the myostatin gene are associated with muscle hypertrophy and hyperplasia correlated to doubling of muscle mass in several mammals such as mice, dogs, sheep, cattle and humans [86]. Increased IL-6 within the normal physiologic range may be helpful for regulation of metabolic disease, infection defense, hepatic tissue homeostasis and liver regeneration [149,395].
