If you think back to Matthew, chapter 12 you'll remember that there was a crowd once after Jesus had performed a marvelous wonder. And in verse 34, Hes called a son of Abraham. And to them Jesus says: 'no, you render to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar.' The legal father is on par with the real father as regards rights and duties . They did not know what to say. Why in the world would you plop a genealogy right down in the middle of an exciting storyline like that? Now let's look. Second Samuel 7 features Gods promise to raise up Davids descendant Solomon as king, with the promise that he would build the Temple (a house) in verse 13. The people knew Jesus had come to establish His kingdom, but they failed to understand that His kingdom was different from the kingdom they imagined. Matthews Gospel tells us about Josephs genealogy, but he was not Jesus biological father. 'I am greater than you have ever dreamt of.' At His triumphant entry, Jesus was publicly recognized for the first time as the Messiah by the crowds. And heres our only hope, my friends. Matthews unique uses of the term Son of David are found in 1:1; 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 21:9; and 21:15. The first one comes in the very first verse. As scholar Michael Brown has observed, Common sense would also tell you that the followers of Jesus, who were totally dedicated to demonstrating to both Jews and Gentiles that he was truly the Messiah and Savior, would not preserve and pass on two impossibly contradictory genealogies.1 Just because we cannot figure out why the genealogies differ doesnt mean there cannot be a good explanation, even if it is not entirely clear to us some two thousand years later. The New Testament presents Jesus as the fulfillment of this requirement for the Messiah, that he be descended from King David. Luke is showing us this family tree in order to teach us the humanity of Christ, that Hes a real flesh and blood human being with a genealogy and a lineage, just like you and me. Their eyes were wide; their voices were beginning to show agitation, and they began interrupting him as they were translating this genealogy in Matthew 1. You see, the Pharisees answer to Jesus' question was half right. two blind men cry out and say, have mercy on us, son of David! The most enlightened religious teachers in the land can't see that He's the Messiah, but blind men by the road know that He's the son of David. There was a great Pharisee a renowned Pharisee, one of the leaders of his party who was on the way to a city called Damascus to persecute Christians a few months a few years after this event. And, finally, hes telling us this family tree in order to teach us that Jesus is the Son of God. The Navarre Bible commentary on Matthew's Gospel explains why this is important: Jewish genealogies followed the male line. Luke begins with Jesus being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph (Luke 3:23) and works backward beyond Abraham all the way to Adam. May I translate that? It is possible that Matthew traces Jesus descent through Joseph, and Luke through Mary, who is assumed then to also be of Davidic descent. I mean, its almost the first question we ask: Who are your people? Well, Lukes telling you who Jesus people are. 'Of course, the Messiah will be the son of David.' He marks Jesus out clearly as the Son of God. He is out of Marys flesh and blood and womb, but Hes not Josephs natural son, and so it would make sense that Matthews giving you Josephs genealogy as the legal father of Jesus and that Luke is giving you Marys genealogy, the actual line of Jesus. Jesus rescued us all from the paws of the devil and the jaws of sin (1 John 3:8; Colossians 1:13) and continues to Shepherd us. They believed the Messiah would free the Israelites from all foreign power and they would become a world power under this king. Jesus' designation as the Son of David carries with it various meanings. And this Canaanite woman says: have mercy on me Lord, son of David. And again in Matthew, chapter 20, verses 30 and 31 He has these two blind men beside the road crying out, have mercy on us Lord, son of David. His Savior was God in the flesh. The Jewish expectation of a military Messiah, who would defeat the Romans, was different to the type of saviour Jesus was. Gresham Machen, a very famous Presbyterian scholar in the twentieth century, suggested that Matthew is giving us the legal royal descendants of David the people who would have been king, had Davids line continued on and that Luke is giving us the descendants of David in the particular line that ends with Joseph, but that the two lines converged at the end because Jacob, the father of Joseph, had no issue and so the succession plan passed to Helis line.
